Caxton's New World? Creativity and Publishing in the Internet Era

The Internet and the Web are revolutionizing non-fiction publishing, and vast amounts of material are now routinely distributed in this way. The same cannot be said about fiction, however. The human love of storytelling has expressed itself in book form since the invention of the printing press. This paper considers some of the issues involved in the use of new technology for fiction publishing and examines the potential and the problems. We foresee the need for advances in search engines, security, user interfaces and other technologies in order to provide an environment harnessing network technology which is as congenial as the conventional paper book.
