The broadcasting of a hierarchical video permits to adapt to the needs or capacities of receivers and network links. In this paper, we first present the principles of hierarchical video coding and more especially the PVH algorithm (Progressive Video with Hybrid transform) that we use. Then, we propose a new multicasting architecture based on several features. The first feature is a new level of addressing called logical addressing. It allows on the one hand to provide an efficient multicast service, and on the other hand, to construct reduced bi-directional trees consisting of logical edges or tunnels connecting nodes playing an active role in the tree. The second main feature is that a group manager controls tree membership and that multicast trees are constructed from root to leaves contrary to most current solutions. Moreover, there is a packet filtering mechanism allowing receivers to choose the video layers they want to receive. Finally, we compare our architecture (LAR) with the usual multicast architecture for layered video multicasting, using PIM-SM as a routing protocol.
