The development of integrated automation systems is a difficult task: the number of system components (Production Units, systems, etc), the interactions between them, different behaviors (continuous or discrete) expected in each one of the components. The fact that each element can be viewed in a different way, depending on the kind of decision to be performed, makes more complicated the development of the integrated system. Designing the whole system as a composition of objects, where each component is an object ant the objects can be composite, appears to be the simplest and safest way to develop the entire automation system. This work describes a way to design and build integrated automation systems where behaviors are described by Extended Finite State Machines (E-FSM) and the whole system results from the composition of different components in a hierarchical system.
