Machine Science between Theory and Practice from Aristoteles to Monge an Attempted Prehistory of Kinematics of Mechanisms

This paper is an attempt to give an overview of landmark works on machine science that can be regarded as a prehistory of kinematics of mechanisms as we know it today. From Aristoteles to Monge special attention will be given to the development of the classification systems and the conception of machines.
