This study presents a method to predict maximum seismic response of building structures. Sincethe method is based on the balance between the seismic input energy to the building and thepotential hysteretic energy absorbed in the building, it can readily be applied not only to thebuilding itself but also to the one with all sorts of damping devices. The method makes use of theVelocity-Displacement Response Spectrum (VDRS), in which the velocity is an equivalent oneconverted from the energy corresponding to the maximum half cycle peak-to-peak displacement.In the first part, a demand spectrum and a capacity spectrum are defined. These two spectra aresuperposed on the same chart in the VDRS Format and the maximum displacement is graphicallygiven as an intersection of them. Through some example analyses, availability of the method isconfirmed by comparing predicted results with those by step-by-step response analysis.
