JSSI MANUAL FOR BUILDING PASSIVE CONTROL TECHNOLOGYPART-1 MANUAL CONTENTS AND DESIGN/ANALYSIS METHODS

Japan Society of Seismic Isolation (JSSI), a key organization for promotion and codification for thebase-isolation scheme in Japan, began a new activity regarding passive control scheme by forming theResponse Control Committee in 2000. The committee published the Manual for Design andConstruction of Passively-Controlled Buildings in October 2003. This paper (Part 1) briefly explains thecommittee, its subcommittees, and working groups, as well as manual contents, mechanisms of dampersand frames, and design and analytical methods. A companion paper (Part 2) summarizes remainingportion of the manual, and subsequent papers (Parts 3 to 12) provide examples for the subjects describedin the manual.
