The current status of the Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPM's) - the limited Geiger mode devices with gain of 10~6 and single photon sensitivity - is described. Using SiPM features as low noise, excellent photon counting capability and very good time resolution the applications of SiPM's in particle physics are discussed. The advantages and limitations of this relatively new technique are experimentally studied and future perspectives of the development are considered.
