SYSTEMS FOR CLASSIFICATION OF LOW-LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTE: SURVEY AND ANALYSIS

This paper presents systems for classification of non-commercial low-level radioactive waste inthe context of remediation and disposal of the waste. It traces development of classificationsystems from regulation of low-level radioactive waste under the Atomic Energy Act, the Low-Level Radioactive Waste Policy Act as amended, the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation ControlAct, and the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act, throughclassification systems from the Department of Energy and the Nuclear Regulatory Commissionto Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material. The authors then discuss disposal options for thesewastes, and analyze decision factors for classifying a waste for management and disposal.
