The intelligent transportation systems (ITS) program was initiated in the 1990’s with the purpose to improve the operation of surface transportation systems through the application of information technology. ITS has resulted in a rapid deployment of information technology in the surface transportation system. Classes of information technology deployed include the following: rn1.1 Wireless communications rn2.1 High-bandwidth networks (i.e. fiber) rn3.1 Complex software rn4.1 Sensors rn5.1 Video applications rn6.1 Web applications rn This paper offers examples of information technology failures and successes in the ITS program. Finally, based on these examples, the paper concludes with recommendations for changes in civil engineering education to better prepare professionals for the challenges of designing, building, and operating infrastructure systems with significant information technology components
