Although normally seen as a state with abundant water resources and reserves, Florida has experienced recurring concerns about the ability of its water supplies to sustain the demands of an ever-increasing population. In recent years, the growth potential of communities in central and south Florida has been limited by an inability to provide adequate and sustainable water supplies. Increases in water demand, coupled with pollution of existing water supplies by agriculture and urban development, have led to periodic water rationing and discussion of limits on growth.rnSelf-sustainable water systems could provide communities with the ability to grow and some assurance against the deterioration of existing water supply sources. Residential rainfall collection systems offer an opportunity for designers to contribute to community water sustainability. This paper addresses the technical aspects (components, capacity, design considerations) of residential rainfall collection systems for central and south Florida, the architectural form-giving attributes of such systems, and a few critical social issues that would arise from the adoption of such systems.
