The South Utah Valley Solid Waste District's (SUVSWD) Springville Transfer Station went on line in early 1991. This transfer station had been designed with an unique side-loading compactor to densify wastes prior to shipment to the SUVSWD's Bayview Landfill located some 33 road miles away. By mid-1997, the Springville Transfer Station was processing nearly 100% more waste than when it was planned in 1988. Added to this, the pre-load compactor had reached its replacement age. Because designers had been faced with two uncertainties (rapid wastestream growth combined with an uncertain wasteshed), the transfer station was designed to allow for its expansion. This paper describes the design, construction, and start-up of several features in the upgraded transfer station, including: installation of a new pre-load compactor; removal, rehabilitation, and re-installation of the original pre-load compactor; rehabilitation and reconstruction of waste containment walls and tipping floors; and facility upgrades and site improvements. The paper ends with a discussion of lessons learned in this renovation project.
