This paper describes a deterministic approach to analyze mixed-elastohydrodynamicrnlubrication of helicopter transmission gear surfaces with asperities. The roughnessrndescription of an actual gear tooth surface is measured using a non-contact surface profiler.rnA thermal, Newtonian, model is developed to study the mechanisms of film generation,rnpressure distributions (for both fluid and contact), and temperature distributions of the fluidrnand contacting surfaces in a line contact problem. The model allows actual metal-to-metalrncontact of the surface asperities in relative sliding. Analysis of five different lubricantsrnused for rotorcraft transmission gears is performed. For one of the lubricants, the velocityrninfluence is analyzed, in order to determine its influence on the contact.
