RETRIEVAL OF WATER INHERENT OPTICAL PROPERTIES BY OPTIMAL ESTIMATION

Due to the variety of parameters and states in oceanrncolour retrievals on one hand and the limited number ofrnchannels with limited precision on the other hand, it isrnnecessary and useful to apply prior knowledge to thernretrieval of ocean colour products. However thernavailable prior knowledge can be very variable.rnWithin the project SIOCS (Sensor Independent OceanrnColour Service) we developed a generic innovativernalgorithm for the retrieval of water inherent opticalrnproperties with a flexible way of including priorrnknowledge in order to constrain the result. The methodrnis based on the inversion of simulated water-leavingrnreflectances from a look-up table. The inversion isrnsolved including prior knowledge in the form of anrnapriori state and an apriori covariance matrix.
