A quantification of the available light in the waterrncolumn is key to evaluate the water quality in lakes as itrnis one of the major factors determining primaryrnproduction. The light environment in water is generallyrndescribed in terms of the vertical attenuation coefficientrn(Kd) and euphotic depth (Ze) where the light is reducedrnto 1% of its (just below) surface value. Reliable modelsrnto estimate KdPAR (and Ze) from remote sensingrnmeasurements have been successfully demonstrated inrnmarine applications using typical ocean colour missionsrnsuch as MERIS-envisat (300m) and MODIS-AQUArn(250-1000m). In this study, we present the adaptation ofrna semi-analytical model for Kd and Ze, developed forrnMERIS/MODIS, to the new and upcoming sensorsrnbands for inland water cases.
