Mankind is dependent on petrochemical products for heating, cooking, and transportation. Ignition of thesecombustible products can have catastrophic effects. Presently, only OSHA (and similar agencies) requirecombustible gas sensors for worker safety. Current solutions fall into two groups:1) Small and inexpensive yet unreliable2) Great reliability but bulky and expensiveAn intrinsically-safe infrared gas sensor has the potential to meet the performance, reliability, size and costrequirements for the mass market. In the future, it can be used in other products to protect human health, safety,and the environment.
