Induction and Selection of Japonica Rice Mutants with High Quality Grain

F_1 dry seeds, japonica rice Hainan 68 crossed with Jia 52, were treated with 10 krad of ~(60)C_0 γ-rays, and then, F_2 were treated with 20 krad of ~(60)C_0 γ-rays again. A mutant E203 with high quality grain was obtained through several generation selections. Grain quality of the mutant had excellent performance in milling and cooking compared with its parents and control variety Xiushui 11 (which with high quality grain in the area of Zhejiang province, China). Its milling quality was even better than and cooking quality was similar to Koshihikari --- a very famous high quality grain variety in Japan. The above results implied that it is possible to effectively improve grain quality of japonica rice by the irradiation. E203 was one of best varieties in agronomic traits. It has been recommended to rice producers, and used as a new gene resource in japonica rice breeding programs since it has good grain quality and agronomic traits.
