The modal formulation of a panel response to a diise sound field has allowed the evaluation and comparison ofthe contributions from the resonant and non-resonant panel modes to the sound transmission through a singlepanel, as well as to the panel vibration. These modes are shown to be dissimilar in their attributes, An SEApostulation for equipartition of the panel modal energy has been directly contirmed. The non-resonant soundtransmission is found to be less than predicted by the field-incidence mass law. An alternative expression for thecorresponding coupling loss factor has been derived and enabled a better agreement between the calculatedtransmission loss and measurement data.The SEA modeling has provided a reasonable prediction for the vibro-acoustic characteristics of morecomplicated double-panel structures with inner connections. Based on this, an importance of the non-resonantsound transmission is pointed out. Certain phenomena specific for the double-wall structures of finite dimensionsare attributable to it, such as lower effectiveness for sound vs. vibration isolation and lesser insulation of air-bornevs. structure-borne noise.
