Lateral torsional buckling behavior of members in steel structures with hanging-profile connections

The “hanging profile” is a commonly used type of joint in steel structures for horizontal bracingrnsystems in large building projects, where huge compression forces are transferred. This kind of joint is characterizedrnby the connection of a bracing beam to gusset plates only at the top flanges. This type of structures isrnusually simplified as a single-span beam with so-called fork bearings at ends. The present study using finiteelement-rnmethods to investigate structures with “hanging profiles” in 3d modeling showed partially unexpectedrnbut interesting results. According to this study this simplification is not generally valid because the individualrnshapes of the gusset plates as well as the distortional effects of beams and gusset plates at end supports are notrntaken into account.
