If the recalculation of an existing bridge due to deficient verifications is not successful, inrnGermany, the recalculation guide for existing road bridges offers the possibility of arranging compensatoryrnmeasures. The guide differentiates between traffic-oriented compensatory measures and compensatory surveillance.rnThe safety gain due to traffic-oriented compensatory measures is already well quantifiable. However,rnobjective methods to quantify the safety gain due to compensatory surveillance, especially of permanent monitoring,rnare rare and not very detailed. Therefore, in this paper general approaches based on the probability theoryrnare shown.With the help of these approaches compensatory surveillance can be used by roadway authorities asrna sensitive but effective measure in the future.
