The effect of low sulfur diesel, oxygenates and Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) diesel fuel on particulate matter (PM) emissionsrnfrom a Acme Motori-ADX 300 single-cylinder diesel engine was investigated. PM emissions were measured with tworntechniques: Excimer Laser Fragmentation Fluorescence Spectroscopy (ELFFS), which provides an atomic carbonrnfluorescence signal proportional to the PM volume concentration, and Scanning Mobility Particle Sizing (SMPS), whichrngives the particle size distribution. Compared to the baseline diesel, the low sulfur diesel and F-T diesel reduced PMrnmass emissions by 15% and 25%, respectively. The oxygenate/diesel blend and the oxygenate/F-T diesel blend resultedrnin more dramatic reductions of 50% and 70%, respectively. We found that the fuel did not affect the accuracy of thernELFFS measurement.
