The effect of low sulfur diesel, oxygenates and Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) diesel fuel on particulate matter (PM) emissions from a Acme Motori-ADX 300 single-cylinder diesel engine was investigated. PM emissions were measured with two techniques: Excimer Laser Fragmentation Fluorescence Spectroscopy (ELFFS), which provides an atomic carbon fluorescence signal proportional to the PM volume concentration, and Scanning Mobility Particle Sizing (SMPS), which gives the particle size distribution. Compared to the baseline diesel, the low sulfur diesel and F-T diesel reduced PM mass emissions by 15% and 25%, respectively. The oxygenate/diesel blend and the oxygenate/F-T diesel blend resulted in more dramatic reductions of 50% and 70%, respectively. We found that the fuel did not affect the accuracy of the ELFFS measurement.
