Isolation of hop-sensitive variant from beer-spoilageLactobacillus lindneri DSM 20692 and identificationof genetic marker for differentiating beer spoilageability of lactic acid bacteria

To identify species-independent genetic markers for determining beer spoilage ability of lacticrnacid bacteria (LAB), we characterized a hop-sensitive variant isolated from beer spoilagernbacterium Lactobacillus lindneri, which led to the identification of two contiguous ORFs,rnhorB and horC, on a plasmid. These two ORFs appear to encode a regulator and multidrugrntransporter belonging to RND family. In addition, horB and horC were found to be excellentrngenetic markers for determining the beer spoilage ability of LAB. It was further shown thatrnthe combined application of horA and horB/horC is useful for developing a morerncomprehensive microbiological quality control system in brewery.
