Distributed shared memory provides the programmer with the familiar shared memory programming model even when the program executes on a physically distributed system. We present a minimal set of debugger commands which must be implemented for useful debugging of DSM programs and explain the notion of valid debugging. The behavior of the commands is defined and proven valid for a specific implementation of sequentially consistent shared memory. Finally we discuss extending this functionality to relaxed consistency systems and applying related techniques for locating programming errors.
