A pan-Siberian water body classification dataset providedrnunder the ESA STSE-ALANIS Methane project is usedrnto examine intra-annual changes in spring surface watersrnover permafrost terrain in 2007. A post-processing algorithmrnthat determines surface runoff and drainage isrnestablished; the test site being the Yamalo-Nenets AutonomousrnDistrict. The source of the ALANIS dataset isrnEnvisat ASAR WS. The ability of these satellite data torndetect lakes is tested using optical imagery from the JapanrnAerospace Exploration Agency’s ALOS PanchromaticrnRemote-sensing Instrument for Stereo Mapping (PRISM)rninstrument. This comparison shows that ASAR WS imagesrnare a good source despite their coarse spatial resolutionrn(overall map accuracy of 89%), and that the ALANISrndataset is a useful tool for monitoring Arctic thaw lakesrndue to its frequent temporal coverage.
