Since 1977 accident simulation tests on irradiated fuel specimens - mostly spherical fuel elements - have been carried out at the KFA Hot Cells at temperatures up to 2500 ℃ with the aim of obtaining data for analyses of hypothetical accidents in medium-sized HTRs (e.g. THTR 300) /1/. Considerable fission product release above 2000 ℃ has led to the development of smaller reactors, such as the HTR MODUL, in which the fission products are retained in the fuel element even in the extreme case of a depressurization accident /2/.
