OPTICAL IMAGING DETECTORS IIM SERVICE OF PROCESS ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

Novel uses of optical imaging devices (OlDs) in performing spectroscopic measurements are reviewed. In the "planar spectrometer." the usual monochromator/photomultiplier is replaced by a linear wedge filter/photodiode array. The resulting instrument is very compact with critical optical and mechanical alignment eliminated. Another intriguing possibility for using OlDs is to perform analytical chemistry with spatial resolution. The multichannel image spectrometer is an example of such a device. Materials on thin layer plates have been analyzed.
