摘要

Animais and humans have been processing sensory information (traditionally sight, hear-ing, touch, smell and taste) for ages. The maximal information rate that can be assimilated by humans is estimated around tens of binary units (bits) per second, say the few letters correspondent to a random dictation, to the best of our present knowledge. On the other side, millions and millions of bits are necessary to describe the immense quantity of signais that hit us at any time, that is the visual, audio, and haptic (touch) information. Dennis Gabor, who was awarded to the Nobel Prize in Physics for the invention of holography, and made several outstanding contributions to signal processing, remarked in a Guest editorial to a 1959 volume of the IRE Transactions on Information Theory.
