In order to establish a structure and property relationship for a commercial set ofrnpolymers they were evaluated by FTIR Spectroscopy and Differential ScanningrnCalorimetry as well as Thermal Mechanical Analysis. The functional groups as describedrnby FTIR were correlated with either the polymer glass transition temperature, Tg, or thernpolymer melt temperature, Tm. The credibility of the reference polymers is based on arncomparison of their thermal properties from three sets of Society of Plastics EngineersrnResin Kit~? reference polymers secured in the following years: [A] 1979, [B] 1994 andrn[C] 2002. Polyolefin structures are directly related to their melt temperatures and heats ofrnfusion. The impact properties of styrene containing polymers are related to the addition ofrna rubber phase which affects the Tg. The thermal properties of these polymers have stoodrnthe test of time and are reliable, readily available and consistent.
