Polarization modes dispersion (PMD) is the preponderant limiting factor in modern high-speed longdistance optical transmission systems and can be quantified by the differential group delay (DGD) mean value. The main aspect treated in this work is the analysis of the difference between the estimated PMD against the mean DGD at different spectral regions. Three kinds of optical fiber were measured inside an environmental chamber with the polarimetric method with Jones-Matrix eigenanalysis. The results indicate that the behavior of the total mean DGD (or PMD) may not be the best way for determining the constraints on a telecommunications link, as this could over- or under-estimate the effect on the channels of interest. Furthermore, the maximum single DGD measured should also be observed in order to properly predict the behavior of the fiber.
