Peroxide edge wick absorption was measured on laboratory sheets made of TCF- and ECF-bleached hardwood kraft pulps with different amounts of extractives. The results show that a high amount of extractives in the sheets is very detrimental for a good efficiency of the retained AKD in the sheets. Since the extracted sheets show a better sizing at a similar amount of extractives compared with non-extrtacted ECF sheets the results also indicate that some other factors than just the amount of extractives is important for the sizing development. At low AKD-dosage levels the dry sheet density has a large impact on the liquid penetration, and sheets made of different materials has to be compared at the same sheet density. In this case the density effect was observed up to 3 kg/ton AKD, and the sheets of ECF-bleached kraft showed a better resistance against liquid penetration than the TCF-bleached kraft sheets, when compared at the same sheet density.
