Two-step lateral tapering is proposed as an effective means for semiconductorrnwaveguide mode shaping for improved fiber to waveguide coupling without compromising thernwaveguide design. Based on this technique, on-chip spot-size converters integrated with shallowrnetched InP-based waveguides are designed, fabricated and characterized.
