Large diameter monopiles are an established foundation type for offshore wind energy converters (OWECs), although currently the knowledge about the behavior of these piles under cyclic loading is still not comprehensive. The so called Stiffness Degradation Method (SDM), which is a numerical scheme using finite element simulations of the pile-soil system in connection with results of cyclic laboratory tests, enables the prediction of displacement accumulation under one-way loading. The method is described and used here to carry out parametric studies on the influence of various parameters (pile geometry, pile stiffness and loading type) on the pile behavior under cyclic loading. The main factors affecting the cyclic behavior of laterally loaded piles are identified and assessed, and necessary further investigations are outlined.
