ST pairing produced the lowest frequency of errors, as well as the lowest expenditure of total and average times, whereas SW pairing produced the highest ones. Results showed the ST pairing was more efficient than the SP one, and in turn that the SP pairing was more effective than the SW one. It is possible that part of the advantage of the ST pairing in comparison with the others might be due to its bimodal audio-visual presentation, whilst both SW and SP pairings were processed exclusively in the visual channel. Another hypothesis concerning the finding is that since AAC system users live in a "speaking" environment, they tend to apprehend information based on the spoken language (Smith, 1996).
