A Ports perspective on air quality issues in ports and port towns

Historically port towns have grown up around the quays and jetties in order to service the requirements of the vessels, both in terms of the goods carried and the ships crews, and the towns have benefitted from the economic advantages brought by the port activities. No doubt the inhabitants of the port towns have always to some degree had to accept the 'bad along with the good', but the relatively local scale of the activities has ameliorated these effects and assisted in the acceptance of the consequent disadvantages.
