Developing the 'Trading Places' Boot Camp: Sharing Knowledge Between Theatre and Engineering

Systems engineering as a discipline can be described as the application of diverse disciplines, primarily engineering but also including management, psychology, economics, and others. A set of disciplines that have not been formally employed by systems engineering are the arts. Understanding how the arts can benefit engineering and how engineering can benefit the arts may result in a new branch of systems engineering. This paper develops a plan for a boot camp for engineering and theatre students at The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) for the summer of 2019. The goal of this boot camp is to educate students from one discipline in the skills common to the other discipline. Anticipated skills to be learned by engineering students will focus on preference identification. Anticipated skills to be learned by theatre students will focus on methodical design processes. The boot camp will span 3 days, during which students will learn techniques from the other discipline and conclude with a theatre production.
