Customers have paid more and more attention on vehicle interior sound level and sound qualities. With drastically reduction of engine noise, the gear rattle noise generated by the impact between neutral gears inside transmission can be much easily perceived. This paper establishes a gear rattle model, including engine, clutch, transmission box and equivalent load of full vehicle in AMESim software. According to the gear rattle intensity indices acquired from the gear rattle model, some control strategies are successfully applied to a prototype vehicle to reduce the gear rattle noise under idle and creeping conditions.
