New visualization of competency-based education (CBE) in higher education institutional research (IR)

Kobe Tokiwa University made major reforms to curricula and teaching in 2017. Part of these reforms included the introduction of competency-based education (CBE) in science departments. The Tokiwa competencies indicator was developed and comprises 19 competencies. Starting with the 2017 syllabi, the university established a relationship between course designs and the Tokiwa competencies. The current study analyzed student’s row grade data against four Tokiwa core competencies extracted from the 19 competencies. We developed new visualizations of the data, cumulative bar charts that indicate fundamental core competencies statistics that can be used in student advising.
