Game-based learning has many positive effects on student learning, such as enhancing the interaction with students and stimulating students’ learning motivation. However, it is still unclear whether every student can appreciate game-based learning because he/she has various characteristics, among which prior knowledge plays an important role. To this end, this study examines how human factors, especially prior knowledge, affect gamebased learning. Both the Machinarium and the CSI: Web Adventures are considered in this study. The results from this study indicate that prior knowledge has positive effects in the CSI group while it has negative effects in the Machinarium group.
