South Carolina State University Summer Nuclear Science Institutes for High School students and High School Guidance Counselors

South Carolina State University conducted three one-week long nuclear science institutes last summer - two for high school students and one for High School guidance counselors. The institutes required that participants live on campus for one week and featured intense courses in basic nuclear science and radiation detection in the morning, followed by laboratory exercises in the afternoons. The Institutes were funded by two grants, one from the Department of Education (students) and the other from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The objective of the institutes was to introduce all of the participants to the field of nuclear science, dispel apprehensions and misconceptions, and demonstrate the great career opportunities in the nuclear field.
