For several decades, researchers did many hypotheses on the unique behaviour of ICDP in rear finishing stands. All those hypotheses will be discussed to pinpoint among graphite, mechanical and structural properties which characteristics of ICDP make this grade so unique. The aim is to highlight which properties are required to bear the specific degradation and incidents occurring in rear finishing stands. The development of new work roll grades nowadays also rely on modelling to evaluate in use stresses and optimize thermal treatments notably. Advanced modelling combined with the detailed review of the literature on ICDP has led to the development of laboratory trials to evaluate new developed grades versus sticking and incidents in rear finishing stands. Based on modelling and simulation at laboratory scale of specific incidents, a graphitic HSS has been developed and is nowadays used in several hot strip mills throughout Europe. A detailed review of the performances of the graphitic HSS obtained in those HSM will be compared to the actual reference ICDP.
