EuroSTARRS Ground Sampling design at the Nezer Site, Agre forest and Valencia Site

As part of activities involved in the EuroSTARRS campaign, an important requirement was to acquire ground data from the experimental sites during the overflights. The main interest of the ground sampling stands in the provision of input parameters for the microwave emission models. In particular, the microwave emission model tested with the EuroSTARRS campaign- τ-ω model (Mo et al., 1982; Wigneron et al., 1995)- requires information related to the soil (soil moisture, soil temperature, soil texture), as well as to the vegetation properties (distribution, water content, fraction cover). Moreover, soil moisture measurements are needed to test the retrieval methodology of soil moisture from L-band passive microwave brightness temperature, here registered by the STARRS radiometer. Different papers in this proceedings book address specific aspects of the campaign, such as the specific campaign requirements, descriptions of experimental sites and airborne-based activities, data processing and modelling activities, and they can be consulted for specific information. This document contains a description of the ground sampling as regards to magnitudes of interest, sampling design, methodology and results derived from fieldwork. The activities are presented separately for the three experimental sites (Nezer Site, at the Les Landes forest (France), the Agre forest near Toulouse (France), and the Valencia Site near the city of Valencia (Spain)).
