A higher order block backward differentiation formula method (HOBBDF) is presented in this paper. This method is proposed as an alternative solver for solving third order ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The HOBBDF method is able to solve the problems directly using the variable step size technique. Numerical experiment is conducted to verify the method's capability in terms of efficiency when solving the third order ODEs. The performances of HOBBDF method and two ODE solvers in MATLAB, which are known as ode15s and ode23s, are compared. From the experiment, numerical results show that the proposed method outperformed the ODE solvers in producing better accuracy and less number of total steps.
