A Compliant Parallel Manipulator for Trunk Rehabilitation After Stroke

The consequence of the population aging in last decades has been an increase of agerelated disorders, such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, spinal cord injury or central nervous diseases, causing a deficiency in mobility and thus affecting the quality of life of adults. Cerebral vascular accident (CVA) represents the first cause of mortality in women, the second in men, which is only surpassed by heart attack. Although nowadays the mortality rate stands at 11%, the number of patients who survive has increased. Due to the multiple consequences that a stroke can cause, the rehabilitation process is designed based on each patient's necessities. In the early stages of rehabilitation, the focus is on the motor recovery of the torso and the upper and lower limbs, doing exercises as passive mobilisations, re-education of balance, or active assisted movements and muscular strengthening of the affected area, by means of anterior-posterior, rotational, lateral or manipulation motions. Here, the use of assistive devices as standing frames is common for safe positioning of the patient.
