Breast-conserving surgery is an operation to remove cancer while leaving as manynormal tissues as possible.During surgery at the hospital,the surgeon will try to remove allof the cancer tissues,plussome surrounding tissue assurgical margins.Then anon-site pathologistperforms a frozen sectionand H&E staining analysisof the resected tissueswhile the patient is stillunder anesthesia,and the surgical cut is still open.Despite the ability of the H&E staininganalysis method to distinguish the morphologies of cancer and normal tissue,the procedureis laborious and time-intensive (usually takes about one hour) and may delaydecision-making during breast cancer surgery.Although new methods including CT-Scan,MRI as well as some fluorescent probe reported by other groups are emerging and candetect the presence of cancer,those reported methods cannot be used to observe themorphology of cancer and normal tissue.Observation of cancer morphology is essentialsince different morphological types of cancer have different behavior and prognosis,andtheir treatment,including surgery approach,could also be different.
