Antioxidant Activity of Apple Snail Crude Extracts

Extract from marine mollusc possess many bioactive compounds such as antimicrobes, antineoplastic, anti-inflammation and antioxidant that inhibit lipid peroxidation and act as antiradical. However, studies on freshwater snail such as apple snail are still limited and given less attention due to being label as a pest in paddy fields and wetlands. Hence, this study aims to evaluate the antioxidant activity of crude methanol and chloroform extract of apple snail, Pomacea maculata. The antioxidant activity of the extracts was determined based on DPPH radical scavenging. The results demonstrated that crude methanol extract possesses superior antioxidant activity compared to chloroform extract. Methanol extract reduces DPPH radical by 83.85 ± 2.67 % with chloroform crude extract was only 11.29 ± 3.25 %. This finding concludes that the methanol extract from P. maculata possesses a high antioxidant activity.
