G-quadruplex is one of the local structure formed in nucleic acids with guanine-rich sequences. It contains the stacking multiple G-tetrads, which consist of four guanine bases with hoogsteen hydrogen bond. It has been reported that hnRNP U (heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein U) preferentially binds to G-quadruplex RNA such as TERRA (telomeric repeat-containing RNA) and mRNA which are involved in cancer suppression or the neurodegenerative diseases amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD), respectively.1,2
