Optical Absorption Spectra and Energy Band Gap in Manganese containing Sodium Zinc Phosphate Glasses

Optical band gap energy in the system 25Na2O-(75-x)[0.6P_2O_5-0.4ZnO]-xMnO_2 (where x=0.5,1,5,10 and 20 mol.%) have been studied. The intensity of the absorption band found to increase with increase of MnO_2 content. The decrease in the optical band gap energy with increase in MnO_2 content in the investigated glasses is attributed to shifting of absorption edge to a longer wavelength region. The obtained results were discussed in view of the structure of phosphate glass network.
