Mycoplasma hyosynoviae (MHS) causes arthritis in pigs 3-5 months of age affecting up to 50% of the group. 1 Mycoplasma hyorhinis (MHR) causes polyserositis and arthritis in pigs 3-10 weeks of age. 1 Infection with these pathogens compromises animal welfare, creates continuous treatment costs and impacts performance.2 There is a lack of information regarding the duration of shedding and changes in the dynamics of infection of MHR and MHS when herd closure is applied. Such knowledge will provide further insight into the possibility of eliminating these agents from swine herds. The objective of this study was to determine whether the implementation of herd closure can have an effect on the prevalence of MHS and MHR infection.
