My view of the present state of research on carbohydrate chemistry Access to pure, defined carbohydrates is key to a detailed understanding of the role of glycans in biological systems. Glycans are of particular importance in immunology and the interactions of the microbiome with the human body. Given the fact that complex glycans cover bacterial as well as human cells it is not surprising that carbohydrates play an important role for attachment of bacteria but also in immunomodulation. In the immunological context, glycan have both beneficial as well as detrimental effects and a detailed understanding of structure-function relationships is needed.
