The Missing Link in Modeling and Simulation Validation

The validation of complex and human behavior models has been long recognized as a difficult and intractable problem. In fact, the inability to compile sufficient quantities of quantifiable data is recognized as a significant challenge in model validation. Nevertheless, despite nearly fifty years of study, research, and development, little progress has been made to address the problems. This paper examines the history of the development of modeling and simulation validation practice. It examines the fundamental philosophy underlying modeling and simulation validation to assess why there has not been more progress. It discusses alternative philosophical worldviews and the potential implications they might have on the prevailing modeling and simulation validation frameworks. Lastly, the paper identifies areas requiring new research and development required in order to further the science of M&S validation. It identifies potential lines of inquiry and philosophical questions within the affected fields of study.
